The theme park Universal Studios Japan (USJ) reported attendance numbers of 1.63 million for August 2016, an increase of 15% over the comparable figure from the previous August. USJ has managed to top its previous August’s attendance figures for six years in a row now. The success is attributed to the popularity of its Universal Jump Summer, which showcases famous manga from Weekly Shonen Jump, as well as a promotion that allows one adult to bring one child for free (only available to those who live in Kansai, where USJ is located). This makes August 2016 the second-highest attended month in USJ history (the highest being October 2015, which welcomed 1.75 million guests).
The Universal Jump Exhibition includes original storyboards, character designs, and setting documents for well-known manga like My Hero Academia, Haikyu!!, and Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo, plus props from the upcoming film Death Note: Light Up the New World and setting documents for One Piece Film Gold drawn by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece’s creator, himself. Unfortunately, taking pictures of these is not permitted, but ANN’s Managing Editor, Crystalyn Hodgkins, paid a visit to the park recently and sent us these pictures of past Shonen Jump covers, which is permitted.
Elsewhere in the park, My Hero Academia is represented with this trick street art perfect for goofy photo opportunities.
Hungry Dragon Ball Z fans can opt for a meat bun stamped with “enlightenment” (the first character in Goku’s name).
One Piece aficionados might prefer the Feast Restaurant, which offers several meat platters, including one with bread that looks like the Flame-Flame Fruit.
You can also order this passionfruit/mango dessert that looks like a familiar hat.
These mugs let you make a (non-alcoholic) toast to the Straw Hat Pirates’ continued victories.
Sanji shows his skills at bartending with these mocktails — for “a lovely lady,” naturally.
Universal Jump Summer’s most famous exhibit, however, might be the “Clone-oids” (highly realistic statues) ofHaikyu!!’s Shōyō and Tobio.
